Nature's Best Photography

Launched in 1996 at the Washington DC National Zoo, the Nature's Best Photography Windland Smith Rice International Awards has now become an exhibition program at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History. Out of nearly 25,000 annual entries, award-winners are chosen in 19 categories including the Grand Prize, the Conservation Photographer of the Year, and Youth Photographer of the Year.

Each year's Fall Special Collectors' Edition of Nature's Best Photography magazine is a complete catalog of all the Winners and Highly Honored images.

This competition is proud to be named in memory of accomplished photographer and conservation advocate, Sandra Windland Smith Rice, for her unyielding support of emerging photographers worldwide. Windland began her alliance with Nature's Best Photography in 1999 when she won the Animal Antics category of the Awards competition. Soon Windland became deeply involved in the Awards program, volunteering her time, while both she and her family also generously supported the program.

The flagship publication of Nature's Best Photography is a large-format showcase of nature subjects as recorded by the world’s leading professional photographers, naturalists, and adventurers as well as new emerging photographers.
